J & I are thinking about hosting a refugee at our downstairs apartment where no one sleeps. At first I was a little shaky on the idea, but I really want to help out somehow. I dont have much money or time...so maybe I can provide someone with a place to sleep for a little while. I dont want a permanent house guest by any means..I was thinking maybe have a college student stay for a week or two until they find an apartment or friends/family to stay with. Probably a female, because I'm a little more comfy with that. And of course I"d have to interview them before hand, so make sure we're going to get along, because we'll still be downstairs a lot. And we've got some stuff downstairs that we'll have to move, cuz I dont want it stolen (you never know, some of these people are really desperate right now). And they'll probably be eating a lot of ramen, cuz thats what we can afford, but maybe that would be ok? We've been thinking that "beggars can't be choosers" and if I were in that sitch, I'd be happy not being stuck in a convention center with thousands of other people, that I"d be grateful for a futon & some ramen & a private bathroom & some quiet. Thoughts?

From what I've seen on the news, after the war-zone conditions in NOLA, a quiet futon would be bliss. I think most of the refugees are getting food stamps, too, so she might be able to get some frozen mixed veggies to mix with the ramen.

I think it'd be wonderful for you to provide a place for someone to stay. If I had a bed, I would want to offer it to someone as well. As far as the ramen goes, the rest of us PSAers could chip in and donate food to you/yall for the purpose of not always eating ramen (I know I would donate some).

go for it, it would provide someone with a little bit of comfort and it would be a great example of human kindness, which i imagine everyone who went through Katrina needs to see right about now what with all the crap that has been going on.

Go call up Katrina Help Austin. They're setting up potential housing donations with evacuees. They will also listen to any specific requests you have about who you can take in. They're number is 440-7965.
